The MSA2017 Metrology Conference was a huge success and thanks must be extended to the local committee for the part they played to make this Brisbane event an excellent opportunity to learn and network.

The local team on the ground in Brisbane included conference superman Rai Pippia plus Nigel Gibson, Natalie Gibson, Craig Colhoun & Jackie Colhoun – all of whom did a marvelous job.

117 attendees made up of delegates, exhibitors and plenary speakers joined us for all or part of the 3 day conference. The Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre was near the heart of the city and handy to everything we needed. The BCEC staff made running the conference seamless for us all.

One of the highlights of MSA2017 was the trade exhibition area – the amount of jaw dropping equipment on display made your eyes water. The trade experts were also able to answer all those tricky application problems and there is no doubt that many of the delegates have returned from MSA2017 with a new wish list. It was invaluable to meet the company gurus personally as often relationships forged at conference are useful further down the track when technical problems arise.

The plenary speakers were world class and we are very grateful to them all for giving up their valuable time. Peter Fisk CEO of NMIA spoke on the new SI, the progress we have made to date and what it means to us.
Peter Thompson CEO of NPL addressed us on industry and measurement challenges and creating impact from science. John Church’s presentation on mapping the changes of the ocean gave us irrefutable data to digest that made us all sit up and acknowledge. Andre Luiten showcased new innovations that have come about as the result of break throughs in science – such as checking the pH on the surface of excised tumours in order to reduce the number of repeat operations.

There was a strong showing of higher level presentations this year and an opportunity to learn from each and every presenter. Training opportunities and conferences are always a sound investment if you can return from them armed with at least one improvement that can be applied to your business.

This was certainly the case at MSA2017 as the presenters and fellow delegates were more than happy to share their successes and horror stories so that we could all learn from their experience.

Looking forward to MSA2020, we ask you to encourage all the 2nd and 3rd tier laboratories you meet and inform them about the network and learning opportunities that are available at our biennial conferences - after all promoting MSA is promoting sound measurement practices.
