Dear MSA members,
Earlier last week we became aware that a plugin associated with the MSA website has been compromised. This led to a situation where if you were to do a Google search (it seems limited to Google) for ??Metrology Society of Australasia? and then follow the link that was returned, you would sometimes be redirected to a different website rather than our MSA website. As soon as we became aware of the issue, we took steps to rectify the issue and, as far as we can tell, the issue has been fixed. We have also taken the step of adding an extra layer of security to the website to prevent this happening again.
Although we have no way of knowing, it is possible that the party that compromised the plugin may have been able to access the database of member records. The members?? information which is stored does not include any credit card or other financial information, since payments are handled externally, and all passwords are encrypted. But the information that may have been able to be accessed would include the information that you can see when you login, i.e. name, address, email address, phone numbers, etc. As an extra precaution, we would recommend members login to the website and reset their password (https://metrology.asn.au/
At this time, I would like to thank Liam Shanahan for his immediate action and huge amount of work rectifying the issue.
This message is being sent to you in the interests of transparency and disclosure. If you have any concerns about this situation, please feel free to discuss this with me by email to president@metrology.asn.au.
Yours faithfully,
Tony Bergen
President
Metrology Society of Australasia
