Successful PACTAM deployees share the ethos of Australian Volunteers International.
Reporting to the Permanent Secretary of the Fiji Ministry of Industry and Trade, key objectives of this assignment are to review the operation of the Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards. This includes: the capacity of national trade measurement officers, relevance and alignment of national trade measurement laws to requirements of current market needs and the overall vision of the Fijian Government, and, its ability to play a greater role in regional metrology.
Expectations of this role are to –
• Identify current strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges of the current trade measurement system
• Assess service providers, including: certifiers, test and calibration laboratories, inspection bodies and standard setting organisations
• Recommend policies and strategies to improve current principal laws and policies on metrology infrastructure identifying deficiencies in addressing developments in the marketplace
• Present a gap analysis identifying risks and weaknesses in current Department operations and make recommendations on efficiencies and its future role in the region
• Present an action plan with strategies and identify resources to facilitate the recommendations

• Your extensive experience in legal and physical metrology with demonstrated understanding of certification, accreditation, standards and metrology systems operations
• Your understanding of economics and trade relations of Pacific Islands countries and the region
• Your applied knowledge of capacity assessment and capacity building
• Ideally, your previous experience living and working in developing countries and/or remote communities;
• Your reputation for achievement due to your highly developed communication, stake-holder management and cross-cultural skills
• Your relevant tertiary specialist qualifications

The allowances package includes $875 per day plus living allowance, airfares and insurance.
This position is part of the Pacific Technical Assistance Mechanism (PACTAM), which places highly-skilled deployees in the Pacific to assist local employers to meet their human resource needs and contribute to building capacity in the workplace.
