The 2025 MSA Metrologist Award winner is Liam Shanahan. Tony Bergen acknowledged Liam’s achievements and presented the trophy during the MSA Conference dinner in Sydney. The award, last presented over 10 years ago, is about celebrating excellence in metrology.
Liam became the Technical Manager and Software Developer for Australian Pressure Laboratory (APL) in 2009 and then stepped up to Director/owner of APL in 2019. Over that time Liam has developed APL’s capability to test high vacuum, high pressure and electrical testing – all with low uncertainties. APL, under Liam’s stewardship provides an affordable and efficient facility for the calibration of reference equipment belonging to Australasia’s second and third tier laboratories. This also includes introducing and hosting proficiency testing (PT) schemes to ensure compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. These PT programs enable Australasian calibration laboratories access to an essential requirement for the continuation of their ISO 17025 accreditation.
Liam was pivotal in the early MSA pressure users’ group and co-drafting of the MSA Test Methods that are published on the website.
Since 2017, Liam has assisted the metrology community as a NATA Technical Assessor and from 2022 as a member of the NATA Calibration Advisory Committee (AAC).
Liam has made a significant contribution to various activities to see the MSA flourish. His work on the MSA web site, MSA membership and payment systems and MSA conference activities all speak to Liam’s dedication to the measurement industry. Liam is an outstanding advocate for Metrology and accreditation in Australasia and a hardworking dedicated member of the MSA community.
