The MSA Professional Metrologist Programme (MSA-PMP) has been initiated to ensure that, in the absence of formal qualifications for metrologists in Australia and New Zealand, a peer recognition system exists for all professionals working in all metrology fields. This programme has been designed to give recognition to metrologists in their fields of expertise with formal recognition by the MSA.Â
Professional Metrologist Programme
Recognition Levels
The programme offers two levels of professional recognition in metrology, with the designatory letters:
- Professional Metrologist (P-Metr)
- Principal Metrologist (C-Metr)
The Professional Metrologist recognition is intended for someone who has worked as a metrologist for some time and has shown leadership and/or advanced skills in metrology. The Principal Metrologist recognition is intended for someone who qualifies as a Professional Metrologist but over a longer career timeframe.
What is a Metrologist?
A metrologist is a specialist in the science of measurement. They ensure that measuring equipment and measurements are accurate, reliable, and consistent across various industries. Metrologists often perform calibrations, testing or measurements, development of standards and research. Their roles are crucial for quality control, safety and compliance to industry regulations.
Assessment process
This page contains form fields to submit for application for the Professional Metrologist Programme. It includes a points calculator spreadsheet that needs to be downloaded, filled out, and submitted with the application. Also required are documents showing qualifications, etc.
Once the application is submitted, it will be assessed by the Peer Review Panel. Note that referees will be contacted so we recommend that you inform them of your application in advance. The approval process normally takes around two weeks, after which you will be informed of the outcome.
Upon successful completion, a certificate of professional recognition will be issued to the applicant by the Peer Review Panel.
Fees
The application will have two fees. An initial fee of $150.00 which will cover two years of MSA-PMP recognition. Thereafter, a fee of $100.00 paid every two years as part of a review process. This is in addition to the MSA membership fee – the MSA-PMP awardee must remain a member of the MSA while they maintain the recognition.
Note that the fees are only payable upon acceptance into the programme: an invoice will be sent to successful applicants with payment details.
